1. SCOPE AND CLASSIFICATION

1. Scope. This specification covers the general requirements for equipment used for the automatic bulk degaussing of recorded magnetic media. It describes in general the desired mechanical features and sets forth the electrical and magnetic performance requirements.
   
   
2. Classification. Automatic tape degaussers shall be classified by type and style.

1. Type. The type designator is a reference to the maximum level of coercivity of the magnetic media that the equipment can erase. Degaussers shall be specified as meeting Type I or Type II requirements.

a. Type I Degaussers. Equipment rated to degauss magnetic media having a maximum coercivity of 350 Oersteds.

b. Type II Degaussers. Equipment rated to degauss magnetic media having a maximum coercivity of 750 oersteds.

2. Style. The style designator refers to the method of loading the magnetic media into the degausser.

a. Manual Loading Style Degaussers. Manual loading degaussers are typified by drawer type single reel degaussers that require the operator to perform a task (i.e., close a drawer or push a button) to initiate the degaussing cycle for each reel of tape loaded into the degausser.

b. Continuous Loading Style Degaussers. Continuous loading or automatic loading degaussers are typified by the conveyor belt style degaussers which do not.

1. DEGAUSSER EQUIPMENT

1.1 Type I Degaussers - These degaussers have satisfied the requirements to degauss magnetic tape having a maximum coercivity of 350 Oersteds (Oe).
